Here is a one-of-a-kind photo, a W.B.&H. interurban descending Penobscot Mountain into Ashley. This was probably taken before 1917 because that year, the W.B.&H. sold all first-generation cars like this to a broker and bought all-steel second-generation cars. The older cars ended up on a Maryland interurban, the W.B.&A.: Washington, Baltimore & Annapolis. This photo was taken from (probably) "the Boulevard Bridge" which connected Hazleton St. to Hazleton Turnpike (present-day Route 309). Note some kind of crop field on the left. All the topography in this picture was long ago obliterated by stripmining, the transformation of 309 from a country road to a highway and the building of I-81. The scene is today occupied by 81's exits to 29 and 309. A brief line of power-poles between 81 and 309 indicates the path of the old line. |
