Here's a rather odd postcard depicting a pretty blah scene. Its subject is the Laurel Line tracks sweeping out of downtown Scranton toward the carbarn and powerhouse. The carbarn, I understand, still exists. The Harrison Ave. Bridge now crosses the scene and the Central Scranton Expressway was built along the Roaring Brook, that stream flowing along the powerhouse. The tracks at right are Lackawanna's, feeding into the extensive shops, now Steamtown USA. The passenger tracks heading into the station are on the bank, upper left. After the interurban closed, Lackawanna used the Laurel line tracks for local freight service, prologing the right-of-way's into the 60s. Today, Steamtown is restoring parts of the old Laurel Line right-of-way for its vintage trolleys. I believe the objective is to connect downtown Scranton with the Montage Ski Resort/Red Barons Stadium. |
