Here is a 100-year-old view of Northumberland from the top of Shikellamy Mountain, the latter named for a Native-American chief whose head it is said to resemble. On the point where the Susquehanna's West Branch meets the main river, Northumberland was an important railroad connection where the Lackawanna met the Pennsylvania, Northern Central and Reading Co. However its history goes way back into colonial times. The covered bridge in the foreground carried what is now Route 11 across the West Branch. The bridges on the right cross the main Susquehanna to Sunbury, another ancient town. Continue.
