If we cross the West Branch and skirt Shikellamy Mountain on Route 11, we soon come to PP&L's Sunbury Power Plant, actually across the river from Sunbury in Shamokin Dam. It is one of many power plants on the Susquehanna, the most famous being Three Mile Island. It was in Sunbury in 1883 that Thomas Edison set up an electrical system without the bugs of the troublesome one he had built in New York the previous year. Thus, Sunbury became the third place in the world to be electrified. The Sunbury plant has been altered since this picture and long gone are the PRR hopper cars that used to feed it with coal. PP&L had its own hoppers sporting the Reddy Kilowatt logo used by power companies for a few decades. Back to Beginning. Return to NEPA Home. |
